"Before joining Cancer Research UK, I worked as a management consultant. Like many people here, I came because I wanted to give something back. I remember being surprised at how professional the organisation was and at the high calibre of the people. But I have to say I work harder and more intensely now than I ever did before.
I've found you have to be quite creative in your approach, because the financial resources aren't the same as in a commercial organisation. You also need lots of energy and a problem-solving mindset.
It's about listening to what customers want and then building the right solution, with help from your team. It's certainly not an easy option. There are a lot of expectations and you've got to have commitment - but it is fun along the way!
There's a feeling that everyone's in this together, so you need to rise to the challenge, say when things aren't working and help to create a team."
