"What's always struck me is the sense of belonging at Cancer Research UK. There's a real family-feel that's unique to the organisation. You can meet someone totally new and you know they'll welcome you. I get to meet a real cross-section of the organisation in POD - and also in the café - it's one of my favourite places!
There are a lot of deadlines in payroll, so you have to be firm but fair. If you make an exception for someone, you affect the rest of the department, but you can help people out by tailoring your customer service.
For example, getting back to someone as soon as you can, or ringing them at certain times when you know they're less busy can make all the difference. I love the fact I can have a positive impact on an individual that way. You have to be patient, organised and calm, with a sympathetic ear. People work very hard and you have to work quickly and fit in with them."
