"In some respects, working in POD is like working anywhere: you have to take the rough with the smooth. Our department supports over 3,500 employees and it's certainly not a cushy number. There are complex strategic issues but there's also the day-to-day transactional stuff. Although we've moved more towards a business partnership model, that mix is still really necessary. In short, don't expect to be swanning round, acting as a consultant to customers all day.

You've also got to understand that what we do is for our customers, not for POD. Here, customer service means being focused, consultative and adding value, not just saying 'I love people'. A can-do approach is key, especially when it comes to development. You've got to take the opportunities that come along, not wait to be talent-spotted.

If you want promotion, you've got to get involved in the projects and secondments that come up - not treat them as an extra burden. Cancer Research UK can expose you to loads of opportunities you might not get elsewhere, so it's a fantastic environment if you're proactive."
